The prestigious Reigate School of Art at East Surrey College received a visit from local Member of Parliament Claire Coutinho, who came to celebrate a unique achievement – the completion of the only illuminated Coronation scroll in England. This visit underscored the importance of traditional crafts, with the Reigate School of Art recognized as the sole institution in the country offering a course in Heraldic Art, Calligraphy & Illumination.
In a time when digital media predominates, the continued practice of heritage crafts such as heraldic art and calligraphy holds a special significance. These crafts have been meticulously preserved and passed down through generations. Claire Coutinho expressed immense pride in the fact that East Surrey College (ESC) is a bastion for such enduring artistic traditions.
The project, which saw the production of a stunningly illuminated scroll, was led by renowned artist and instructor Gerald Mynott. Under his guidance, students dedicated weeks to the creation of a work that is not only a testament to their skill but also a celebratory gift marking the reign of His Majesty The King. Claire Coutinho, witnessing first-hand the dedication and expertise of the students, praised their effort in creating such a magnificent piece.
Highlighting the significance of the school's contribution to royal celebrations, the MP drew attention to the fact that previous students have had the honour of designing the King's 'CIIR' cypher and the official coronation invitations. It was a fitting tribute that the students from Surrey were once again entrusted with a commission of national importance – a scroll to commemorate a new chapter in the British monarchy.
The MP's visit culminated in a heartfelt commendation of the students involved in the project – Andrew, Janet, Patricia, Jennifer, and Michela – whose names are now indelibly linked with this historic artefact. This acknowledgment serves as a reminder of the role that local educational institutions and their students play in the broader cultural and historical tapestry of the nation.
As the Reigate School of Art at East Surrey College continues to nurture the talents of future artisans, the legacy of traditional arts remains vibrant and integral to community pride and national heritage.
