A landmark investment of £3.2 million by the government is set to transform the Farncombe and Catteshall section of the 7 km Guildford-Godalming Greenway network, significantly enhancing the safety and connectivity of local transport links. This substantial funding will facilitate a series of comprehensive improvements along the A3100, including upgraded footpaths and cycleways, the introduction of a new off-road path through Broadwater Park, and various safety measures across local streets. This development represents a major stride towards promoting sustainable transportation and ensuring safer travel for pedestrians and cyclists in the community.
Jeremy Hunt MP, representing the constituency, shared the news, expressing his excitement over the successful bid. "This funding is a game-changer for our community, paving the way for critical improvements that will benefit both pedestrians and cyclists," Jeremy stated. The project focuses on a comprehensive overhaul of the A3100, introducing 2.2 km of upgraded footway and cycleway, alongside a new 0.3 km off-road path cutting through Broadwater Park.
The plan includes the installation of 11 new crossings, eight of which are signalised, to ensure safer passage for residents. Additionally, 3.7 km of local quiet streets will see major road, cycling, and walking improvements, incorporating traffic calming measures to enhance safety.
One of the project's core goals is to improve connectivity. New, widened shared footpaths and segregated cycle tracks are set to be constructed, facilitating easier access to Farncombe train station and Godalming town centre. This initiative also aims to create new green routes, enriching the local landscape and offering residents and visitors alike a more pleasant and eco-friendly way to navigate the area.
The improvements extend significant benefits to the younger members of the community, providing safer access to local educational institutions such as Broadwater School and Godalming Junior School. "Ensuring the safety of our children as they travel to and from school is paramount. This investment not only makes our roads safer but also encourages a more active lifestyle among our young people," Hunt added.
Addressing safety concerns, the project will introduce controlled crossings at the New Pond Road roundabout, a notorious spot for accidents involving cyclists. Pedestrian crossings along the A3100 will also be enhanced, with efforts to segregate walking and cycle routes from the roadway, wherever possible.
The Surrey Area Conservatives view this funding as not just an infrastructure win but as a testament to the government's commitment to supporting local communities, enhancing safety, and promoting sustainable transport options. This project is set to transform Godalming and Farncombe into even more vibrant, accessible, and safe places to live, work, and visit.
The enhancements to the Guildford-Godalming Greenway are expected to commence shortly, with local residents and school children among the most anticipated beneficiaries. This initiative underscores the Surrey Area Conservatives' dedication to improving local infrastructure and quality of life for all constituents.
