In a recent community outreach, Councillor Lewis Mears, alongside fellow local councillors Shaun Garrett and Trefor Hogg, and MP Michael Gove, took to the streets of the Old Dean community in Old Dean to connect directly with residents. Their main agenda was to discuss the potential benefits of utilising the Levelling Up Bill's powers to bring additional services and businesses to Old Dean Parade, a proposal spearheaded by the Old Dean Community Group.
During their visit to Horseshoe Close and Bracknell Road, the team received an overwhelmingly positive response from the community, with many residents eager to sign the petition supporting the initiative. This grassroots campaign aims to revitalise the local area by opening more units for business and community use, thereby fostering economic growth and community cohesion.
The day also offered an opportunity to visit the newly renovated Family Cafe, where the group discussed various local issues over lunch. Among the topics was the contentious subject of car parking charges, a hot-button issue following the decision by the new Liberal Democrat administration at Surrey Heath Borough Council to dismiss a petition against increased charges, despite it being backed by over 1,500 signatures. This move has sparked widespread concern among residents, highlighting the need for more transparent and community-focused decision-making.
Additionally, ongoing complaints regarding Accent Housing were addressed, with the councillors providing an update to MP Michael Gove. These discussions underscore the importance of responsive and effective housing solutions for the community.
This engagement underscores the dedication of local representatives to not only listen to their constituents but also take tangible steps towards addressing their concerns. By fostering open dialogue and taking direct action, such as the Levelling Up initiative, local leaders are working to create a more vibrant, inclusive, and prosperous community.
