Surrey properties affected by flooding following Storm Henk could be eligible for government funding which is used in exceptional circumstances to support councils and communities following severe flooding.
Currently, over 100 properties in Surrey are known to have been impacted by flooding and, therefore, could be eligible for grant funding to help recover.
Households, businesses and farmers could be eligible for a range of grants to help recover from the impacts of flooding:
- Severely flood impacted households can apply for up to £500 cash to help with immediate costs.
- Households and businesses significantly affected, could be eligible for 100% council tax and business rates relief for at least three months.
- Small-to-medium sized businesses in eligible affected areas, can apply for up to £2,500 from the Business Recovery Grant to help return quickly to business as usual.
- Eligible flood-hit property owners can apply for up to £5,000 to help make homes and businesses more resilient to future flooding.
- Farmers who have suffered uninsurable damage to land can apply for grants of up to £25,000 to repair and reinstate costs adversely affected by exceptional flooding.
Those eligible must meet the criteria set which includes that flood water entered habitable areas of a property or is deemed unliveable by the local authority. Grants will be administered via local district or borough councils.
Marisa Heath, Surrey County Council Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “It’s been a really challenging and upsetting time for our communities who have witnessed first-hand the impacts of flooding. I’d like to reach out to anyone affected and encourage them to apply for a grant to help recover. There is also a lot of work we are doing on flood alleviation schemes across the county to reduce the risk of flooding to thousands, while also responding to the challenges of climate change.”
